Director

Shih Yung Chun’s work begins with old magazine photos, furniture, toys, and other objects he has collected or discovered. He freely reconfigures the 'objects' surrounding him, spanning past and present. Maintaining a multidisciplinary approach that includes installation, video, sculpture, painting, and short stories, he does not adhere to fixed rules. In KITCHEN, a magazine photo becomes the basis for creating a shelf, objects, and figures, or in Private Hotel, an unfinished dollhouse painting evolves into a large site-specific installation. Private Hotel presents a dollhouse placed in the center of a mirror-surrounded room, with its front blocked off, allowing viewers to peek inside only through a small hole at waist height or from a second-floor balcony, influencing the viewing method and pathway.

Fairy tales and stories made for children are not entirely innocent; they reflect values and ideologies embedded in the triumphs and struggles of human history, interpreted and varied differently across cultures. Many artists are drawn to the multifaceted nature of 'toys' as an artistic subject. In this context, the landscapes and scenes that Shih Yung Chun creates and paints with collected or handmade toys and objects represent an unrealistic dream or a sense of loss that resides within both the artist and the viewer, oscillating between present and past, reality and ideal.
